Former Stanford Pitcher Jeremy Guthrie Makes MLB Debut With Cleveland
Aug. 28, 2004 Cleveland, Ill. - Former Stanford pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (2001-02 at Stanford) made his Major League Baseball debut on Saturday when he pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Cleveland Indians in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Guthrie, who entered the game to begin the top of the ninth inning with the Indians trailing 5-1, struck out his first Major League batter in Jose Valentin before hitting Joe Crede. Ironically, he then forced Joe Borchard (1998-2000 at Stanford) into an inning-ending double play. Cleveland scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth but could get no closer. Guthrie established himself as one of the top pitchers in Stanford history during his two-year stint on The Farm, earning All-American and All-Pac-10 honors both seasons while posting a 26-6 career record with a 2.65 ERA and 264 strikeouts in 291.2 innings pitched. He still ranks eighth on Stanford's all-time win list and is also the only pitcher in Stanford history to record two or more 13-win seasons. Guthrie also had nine career complete games and two shutouts in 40 appearances (all starts). In addition, he posted a 15-1 career record at Sunken Diamond and was 6-1 collegiately in the postseason.
